Using points and miles to stay at Disney World used to be a bear. SPG members could redeem points at the Walt Disney World Dolphin and Swan, but that was it. Sure, you could use some of the fixed-value currencies. But, if you had a pile of Hilton points, you were out of luck.
Why Disney World Perks Matter
In case you weren’t aware, Disney World is wickedly expensive. Not Universal Studios expensive, but expensive. After spending $100 a day on park tickets, you may not even get to ride the most popular rides. That’s where the FastPass+ and Extra Magic Hours come into play. If you stay at a Disney World resort, you get access to FastPass+ at 60 days instead of 30 days for everyone else. You also get access to at least one park a day before or after everyone else gets to access the parks. This used to be constrained to the “official” Disney World hotels. Earlier this year, that changed.
For stays in 2018 at a list of hotels right near Disney Springs, you could get those Disney perks just like you were staying at the Contemporary Resort or Grand Floridian. The big news here was that properties from Best Western, IHG, Hilton and Wyndam were among the list. That meant an opportunity to use your hard-earned hotel points to seriously defray costs for a Disney World vacation with all the perks. There are surprisingly good looking hotels on the list according to my friend Dia. At the time of the announcement, this was only a benefit for bookings in 2018.
Disney Springs Hotel Perks Extended Through End Of 2019
Earlier this week The Points Guy reported that this key benefit would be extended until the end of 2019. This announcement is great for two reasons. First, it’s obviously great that folks can get another year of great Disney World perks without some of the pricing pain of Disney World resorts. Second, the timing is perfect. Once school is back in session, most normal families (not my friend Summer, who already has trips planned through 2023) start thinking about their winter holiday and spring break trips. Now, those families can book with confidence they have more options.
There are plenty of great reasons to stay at a Disney World resort. But, it doesn’t fit in every budget. This announcement is a plus for those folks who really want the full Disney World experience without breaking the bank.
