Disneyland Paris To See A Huge Expansion, Including Marvel, Star Wars And Frozen After Multi-Billion Dollar Disney Investment

While Disney has opened parks around the world and expanded Disney World in the US, the park in Paris has been largely neglected. That seems ready to change.

Disney has announced a 2 Billion Euro expansion of Disneyland Paris. The expansion will include Marvel, Star Wars and Frozen-themed areas.

These don’t seem to be individual new parks. Instead, these appear to be expansions of the Walt Disney World Studios Park. There are only two parks at Disneyland Paris.

Our Disneyland Paris visit a couple of years ago was very disappointing.  Many rides were broken, food stands empty or closed and a handful of kids fighting in a fountain.  There were some fun parts, like Ratatouille and Alice’s Curious Labyrinth.  We really wanted to like it.  But, the conditions made that difficult.

The conditions were largely the consequence of the ownership structure.  For quite some time, a large number of ownership shares of Disneyland Paris weren’t held by Disney.  Instead, they were part of a public/private partnership and also held by other investors.  None of the other investors wanted to put money into maintaining the park. Thus, customers suffer.

Disney has been working to buy back all of the shares.  Last year they closed in on that goal.  Disney signaled then that large investments were coming.  And, now we have a rough idea what they look like.

The Final Two Pennies

It’s going to be a while before we see these new excursions.  The first parts of the expansion aren’t expected to open until at least 2021.  However, Disneyland Paris has already started to see improvements.  Recently, my good friend Melinda from Magic of Miles visited Disneyland Paris and had good things to report.  Slowly but surely, Disneyland Paris is improving.  I look forward to returning when the new additions start opening.

The timing isn’t surprising, given that Paris has the 2024 Olympics.

Amy, good point, though I think this one has been in the works for a while.
